Workshop Series Improving GP Care Home Support

The NHS Alliance, RCGP, ADASS and the National Care Forum are running a series of six workshops on "Improving Quality and Productivity in Care Homes to Reduce Hospital Admissions", during April and May.

Over the last year, many reports have highlighted how the poor management of Long Term Conditions (LTCs) and medicines in care homes increases hospital admissions and out-of-hours consultations.

According to a report by the Department of Health, every day seven out of 10 residents in care homes are exposed to at least one medication error. And Professor Sube Banerjee, Joint Lead of the Strategy at the Department of Health, issued a report in November* highlighting that 1,800 people are dying each year because they have wrongly been prescribed anti-psychotics.

Michael Sobanja, Chief Executive of the NHS Alliance, says: "The need to improve the management of LTC and medicines in care homes - which will result in better patient safety, quality of care and reduce hospital admissions - is long overdue. This is a timely workshop series."

Delegates attending the workshops will learn about a recent report by Dr Jonathan Bayly** on why clinical standards in care homes need to improve to reduce the risk of falls and fracture.

They will also have the opportunity to hear a representative from the ADASS on commissioning for quality in care homes as well as care home providers, who will be speaking on how a proactive partnership with training and incentives can improve quality and productivity in care homes.

With the help of well-documented case studies, workshop delegates will learn how they can implement solutions to improve the quality of care they deliver. One of the case studies is a partnership between GPs and a specialist pharmacy supplier to care homes, who has developed a unique hand-held medicines management solution for care homes (recently nominated by the Health Service Journal for a patient safety award).

Dr Michael Dixon, a GP and Chair of the NHS Alliance, says: "With the NHS facing the most significant financial challenges in its history, it is important that doctors and managers take the lead and work together with our colleagues in social services and care home providers to improve the quality of care and reduce avoidable hospital admissions. I and my colleagues in the RCGP, ADASS and the National Care Forum look forward to meeting you at this important event."

To make the workshops cost-effective, there is a special half price offer to additional delegates from the same organisation.
